We will begin our story in Thatcher, a small town in Arizona.
Listen to some of the townspeople as they comment on a child passing by. She is about ten years old.
Just look at that poor little girl having to care for her infant brothers, such a shame.
The girl, Blanche, lovingly strolled the twin brothers, David and James. She was thinking, How proud I am. She knew she was helping her widowed mother to keep the family going and she took her responsibility quite seriously. An older brother helped to support the struggling family as well. Their mother made and designed highly regarded hats. Hard work, courage, and endurance were essential traits, and then caring for something you loved kept the family going.
These seeds of character built over the years and became deeply rooted providing the qualities necessary to build a legacy the El Coyote. This tightly knit family learned to rise above its challenges. The lure of opportunities in the growing metropolis of Los Angeles attracted Blanches family and so they took up residence there.
Blanche met and married George March in 1931. They opened a small restaurant on La Boca, the El Coyote. George cooked, Blanche handled the front. With a natural love of people and genuine interest in their well-being, the foundation was laid for a successful people business.
Still, it was twelve long years before the El Coyote began to make any money. Blanches tips sustained them. Eventually, they began to sense some success. Being discovered by the studio people, with John Wayne leading the way, was helpful.
Even with this, more challenges ensued as lease complications forced a move to the present location on Beverly Boulevard. As is the case so often in life, this turned out to be a very fortunate move. The face of success began to smile on them.
Then most sadly and dramatically, Blanches beloved husband George was suddenly struck with a heart attack and died. Not to be deterred, and with strength gained as a child, Blanche continued to nurture and care of their precious growing business.
The last several years of Blanches life she was plagued with ill health. Never complaining, she continued to make her daily trips over to the restaurant.
Once there, she would sit anxiously observing the quality of service, food, and care given her patrons. Caring about others was always her focus and mission.
Care for others extended to all her employees resulting in sustained years averaging 10 to 15, some as many as 40, and with a manager of 50 years.
During this period, weekly visits by her brother James (the twin) and his wife, Grace, would find this loving trio enthusiastically and passionately discussing the challenges and joys of the restaurant business. With their shared passion, it was natural that James would become the future owner of the restaurant and after his death, Grace.
There is a magic and energy felt here so say its many devoted customers. First time patrons are struck by that something special that is El Coyote. Its a no attitude kind of place where the warm ambiance provides a setting where all are welcome. Celebrities comfortably blend in and find their own special niche. Accurately described as a microcosm of Los Angeles, patrons cover the gamut economically, socially, and culturally. As one patron stated, when one enters the El Coyote, the party begins.
